Your Guide To Edible Glitter That is Actually Edible
The truth about edible glitter:
All that glitters is gold...or is it? We have put together a guide with everything you need to know about edible glitter (and not-so-edible-glitter) so you can serve your family, friends and clients sparkles that are safe to digest and look pretty too!
With major trends such as unicorn cakes and mermaid churro sundaes breaking the internet and popping up on every Pinterest feed and foodie blog this year, there is a chance that you have witnessed the rise of edible glitter.
Instagram foodies everywhere are competing to come up with the most bizarre, over-the-top use for edible glitter. From lattes and cocktails to pizza and gravy, the sky is truly the limit when it comes to flashy food.
But here is the kicker: not all edible glitter is edible. In fact, most cake dust and decorative glitter products on the market are not. Many of these products are listed as cake decorating supplies, but are made of plastic, “non-toxic” glitters that are exactly like the kind you would buy in the craft aisle at Michael’s.
In January, the FDA issued an advisory warning urging consumers to discontinue the use of "non-toxic" edible glitter products stating:
"Many decorative glitters and dusts are sold over the Internet and in craft and bakery supply stores under names such as luster dust, disco dust, twinkle dust, sparkle dust, highlighter, shimmer powder, pearl dust, and petal dust. A variety of online instructional videos, blogs, and articles promote the use of these glitters and dusts to decorate foods such as cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops. If a baker chooses to decorate a food item with decorations that are not edible, the decorations should be removed before the food is served and eaten."
I mean, who is going to take the time to REMOVE glitter before eating it? Have you ever tried to clean up craft glitter? It’s practically impossible. Imagine how that is moving through your digestive system. Yikes.
Bakery Bling™ was created with these products in mind. Initially starting as a company that sold flavored glittery cocktail rimmers, we saw a need for edible glitter sprinkles that were safe to consume. All of our products are certified kosher and made with ingredients approved by the FDA in a food safe environment. Our Glittery Sugar™ sprinkles, Edible Bling™ glitters, Glittery Dust™ and Glass Glitz™ cocktail rimmers will never contain non-toxic plastics and are always safe to digest.
Just because something is labeled as “non-toxic” doesn’t mean you should put it in our body. You wouldn’t eat a Sharpie, would you? That is why it is best to avoid these products altogether and use digestible edible glitters made from ingredients such as sugar, acacia (gum arabic) carnauba wax, maltodextrin, cornstarch and color additives instead.
We have even created a line of all-natural edible bling glitters and glittery sugar™ sprinkles as well. These sprinkles are similar to our original collection of glittery sugar™ products, but are made with 100% natural ingredients only and get their vibrant colors from fruit and vegetable dyes. We even offer natural versions of our most popular blends such as Snow Queen and Unicorn.
There are plenty of ways to make food a little more fabulous with edible glitter. Just be mindful of the products that you purchase before consuming them. If you are unsure of the quality of your decorating supplies, you can always shop safe at www.bakerybling.com
